What is an IP Address?

An Internet Protocol (IP) address is a unique numerical label assigned to each device connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication. An IP address serves two main functions: host or network interface identification and location addressing.

Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) defines an IP address as a 32-bit number. However, because of the growth of the Internet and the depletion of available IPv4 addresses, a new version of IP (IPv6), using 128-bit for the IP address, was standardized in 1998. Use our IP address lookup to check reverse DNS, location, and network details for any IPv4 or IPv6 address.

Reverse DNS Lookup

Reverse DNS lookup maps an IP address to a hostname via a PTR record. It is useful for email deliverability checks, log investigation, and verifying network ownership. On iply.dev, reverse DNS is part of the IP address lookup: enter a public IP to see PTR hostnames and forward-confirmed reverse DNS alongside location and ISP data.
